Memorial Day 2008

A nation that does not honor its Heroes is one not worth dying for.

Non nobis solum nati sumus

Today is a solemn (and joyful day) to remember the service men and women who have died in defense of our Constitution and way of life. Over 650,000 men and women have paid the ultimate sacrifice since World War I. We owe them a priceless sum, not in value, but one of gratitude and honor.

You Are Not Forgetten

That’s right! Finally broke into the top segment of FICO credit scoring. 760-850, that is.

Oh yea! 😀

Goals I met in 2007:

  • Pay bills on time and in full
  • Save money for any emergencies
  • Build up a low utilization (by having a large credit availability [this can be a double edged sword])
  • Invest a 5 figure $ amount in active stocks and mutual funds
  • FICO Credit Score

    Woohoo version 2

Today has been, not a good, but an AWESOME day! Not only did I find out that I’m getting my tax refund back soon, install 3 new morale computers in my unit to cheer people up, BUT after leaving my stock TEXG sitting idle in the negative for the past few months… the past few days have been very good.

The stock jumped 400%+ in the past 3 days. Leaving me with a HUGE chunk of change to spend (ahem… new motorcycle 😉 ) I bought thousands of shares @ $0.50 🙂

Oh, and I only have roughly 90 days left here in this beautiful country of Iraq! Yay! I’m done with the brains and the gory stuff. I want to just lie on a beach with someone and enjoy the sun.

    Until next time.

Trying to get finances together… I’m doing pretty good at saving every penny I make over here and reinvesting money I already have into some mutual funds and brokerage account. Bills are all paid off.

Why the “bummer” title? Well, things could be better. Things have been super busy and sometimes I can see how some people are getting super stressed out over here. And leading a team of Soldiers whose stress levels are string-thick doesn’t help. The stress doesn’t bother me, as I actually enjoy being busy and not worrying about being able to think when I’m idle (if that makes any sense).

I enjoy the work at the hospital. I get to do more and more each day. Maybe I’ll be the theater surgeon by the end of this… 😉

The last week has been absolutely nuts with the indirect fires (mortars & rockets). They really started kicking up since the weather is getting really warm. All the bad guys are coming out from behind their bushes. It’s not a good feeling since living near the perimeter is my comfort zone. I was awaken at 2am to the shaking and sounds of booms near me, followed by shuffle of flip flops and tennis shoes as our “pod” made way to the bunker to get cover.

    Home… 5 more months… 🙂

Now that I’ve had an idling Treasury account for awhile. I decided to put it to good use while I sit on my money here in Iraq. ING Direct is paying okay interest @ 4.50%, and it’s nearly impractical to open another high yield savings account here overseas. But I still pay taxes on the interest and I could do better.

John at My Money Blog has made several great posts about “laddering” your Treasury bills to work for you! Also don’t forget this about taxes.

I think it’s a great idea to make extra money exempt from The Republik of Kalifornia’s state income tax.

    a last word please...

For those who fight for it Freedom has a taste the protected will never know.

All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act out their dream with open eyes, to make it possible.

Better pass boldly into that other world, in the full glory of some passion, than fade and wither dismally with age.
