Memorial Day 2008

A nation that does not honor its Heroes is one not worth dying for.

Non nobis solum nati sumus

Today is a solemn (and joyful day) to remember the service men and women who have died in defense of our Constitution and way of life. Over 650,000 men and women have paid the ultimate sacrifice since World War I. We owe them a priceless sum, not in value, but one of gratitude and honor.

An update

Well, the internet has taken on a new form here in this lovely country.

It seems like someone stuffed a few rocks into the fuel system and not only helped block a whole bunch of sites (like personal email and stuff) but has attributed to the slower-than-snails crawl of loading a site that DOES work (Google in arabic, sometimes).

So I apologize for not being so speedy on the updates as I usually am.

I have to run to a hidden computer lab that offers unrestricted access and update my journey from here. Or flip a coin and pray my buddy’s internet in his room works, weather permitting of course (the sand does a great job of blocking satellite communication).

Things have been the same as usual. Either that or I am not paying much attention as I used to (they say complacency is the biggest killer here). With the recent word of 15 month deployments and extension of all active duty units to meet that criteria, we have been hit pretty hard with the influx of servicemembers. Not only that, but with my job in the ER, the spike in wounded has not been too easy on the stomach either. There is that major “security push” in the country that has resulted in a huge amount of wounded. The Diyala Province to our east has seen the brunt of it, not to mention the ongoing tug-n-pull of the al-Anbar Province to our west that has been going on since the beginning of this thing. We pray for empty and boring filled days, days where you know someone is ok.

All in all, I enjoy my work here still. I feel like I’m making a difference, which is good. Home in 4 months (pending any extension, of course), and back to the ol’ life of school and work (not for awhile).

I am so irritated right now. I wrote this one, HUGE long blog and when I pressed publish, it deleted the entire thing by signing me out. Oh man, I don’t even remember what I was writing about. Steam is coming out of my ears! Argh

a last word please...

For those who fight for it Freedom has a taste the protected will never know.

All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act out their dream with open eyes, to make it possible.
Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Lawrence of Arabia

Better pass boldly into that other world, in the full glory of some passion, than fade and wither dismally with age.
James Joyce

I hope that you enjoy my blog. My thoughts, though random and spontaneous at most, lack any political or religious favoring, so don't get butt-hurt. Please comment freely.
